Israeli jazz saxophonist Gilad Atzmon's essay on "The Primacy of the Ear"

Rather often I face the same question when interviewed by Arab media outlets: "Gilad, how is it that you observe that which so many Israelis fail to see?" Indeed, not many Israelis interpret the Israeli ethical failure as an inherent symptom. For many years I didn't have any answer to offer.

However, recently I realised that it must have something to do with my Saxophone. It is music that has shaped my views of the Israeli Palestinian conflict and formed my criticism of Jewish identity. Today I will talk about the road from music to ethics.

haiku me

  • pink chairs, mimosas / shivering toes and fingers / turquoise sheers wrap me
  • sun beating, glowing / my warm sweater fits red, right / day of friends and peace
  • sleepyhead hurting/ eyes burn, blink, open again/ my head expands wide
  • saturday chilly / but tonight i see my love / warming, coming soon
